Hamden CT History

If you are buying one of our Hamden CT homes, you would do well to know a little bit about its history. The city was originally settled by Puritans as part of the nearby town New Haven. After the Reverend John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton bought Hamden from the Quinnipiack tribe, it still remained a part of New Haven until 1786. In that year, residents incorporated the geographical area and named it after an English statesman named John Hampden.

One of the most notable residents of Hamden was Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin. In 1798, Whitney began making arms for the U.S. government at a mill in Hamden. It was at this mill that Whitney came up with the concept of interchangeable parts.
